An Orgy of Simplicity – Interview with Dina Broadhurst

As an advertising professional, we’re force to ask ourselves (and others) Why. Why we do certain things – is it to express something, to prove something, to say something about ourselves we wouldn’t say normally?
For example – I’ve got a thing for punching and kicking (relax, it’s just Muay Thai) and recently someone asked me why. Answer was simple – or so I thought, to relax! But I was asked again – “no but really, why?” And after a couple of rounds we came to the conclusion that I fight because I want to get back at the world – an activity that allowed me to express my toughness and be violent in an accepted space (I’m not going to kill someone chill!)
Now let’s apply this to the fascinating world of Art. When it comes to art…the most asked question seems to be “oh what are you creating! But why not we start our questions with “why?” Many times the initial WHY is the story that leads to many more.
I had the pleasure of speaking to Dina Broadhurst, who very much went beyond the “what” and “where” and “when” but instead, told me her story of Why.
For those of you who don’t know (shame on you!), Dina Broadhurst is a Sydney-based artist, designer and collector who draws inspiration on femininity, sexuality and luxury. And get this – her artwork will be showcased at Ovolo Woolloomooloo during Australian Fashion Week! So hey – mark your calendars!
Tell me the Why – why do you create art?
“Why? It allows me to speak my mind, my passion. The art is an expression of who I am and what I stand for. I talk through my art – it’s a way for me to organize my thoughts in my head, and share everything I see, hear and experience to the world.
Why do you speak about femininity?
My artwork is very much an extension of myself – a feminine being and the energy I possess. So the perspectives and themes very much hail from a very feminine point of view. We women take on many roles, we’ve got many faces. I feel my artwork portrays the faces that we have to put forward as a woman in society, the roles we take on. Emotions is also a very big part – it dictates how we live. Take love for example, it’s a driving factor for many of the things we do, isn’t it?
Where do you source inspiration?
“Definitely relationships with friends and partners! These relationships help me learn about myself in a new perspective.”
What’s your story behind “Orgy of Simplicity”?
I was speaking to a good friend of mine about my work when he threw out the line “Orgy of Simplicity” and it really resonated. It was such an accurate insight because it accurately describes how I live and create.
Initially, it looks quiet and simple. But then you’ve got images of chaos, and then the reverse kicks in. You look at the clean structured image, the perfectly poised composition, and the simplicity allows such a clear path to delve right in and see all the underlying messages and emotions underneath. You’re ultimately unearthing a story within.
At first glance, how’s the general reaction towards your artwork?
“Makes people feel confidence and empowered. And I love this!”
Take us through your process of creation!
“It’s impossible to really pinpoint a specific time because my work is my entire life. It’s a passion I live and breathe – and very much dependent on my emotions. The process is really about gathering and collecting over and over again, like a scattered jigsaw puzzle.”
You’ve shot a few celebs to-date, any notable figures your dying to portray with your images?
“I’m currently fascinated with Larry Hoffman, Marian Vacth, and Alicia Vikander.”
Let’s talk fashion! “I wouldn’t be caught dead outside without [………]:
“LAYERS.
Layers, as I can never make up my mind! If I’m in heels, I need to have flats with me. If I’m in flats, I need to have a heel on hand, a big woolen cardigan, a bikini and a towel and my car/travelling wardrobe is always at the ready!
