Cheap Romantic Date Ideas in Hong Kong

Looking for somewhere to take that special someone in your life? Hong Kong is home to tons of great rooftop bars and classy restaurants. If you’re here on a budget however, never fear – there are plenty of cheaper options that will still impress!

Here are some great date ideas that won’t cost you the Earth. Less cliché date ideas are can be more romantic and more memorable, so you might even score some bonus point for putting extra thought into your date out together.

1. Watch the ICC Light and Music Show from IFC Mall

Take the MTR to Hong Kong Station (Exit F) and head on up to Podium 4 of the IFC Mall. The shows start at 7.45 p.m. and 9.00 p.m. every night of the week. Get there 15 minutes early to secure a good spot, and bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy while you watch.

2. Pack a Picnic Basket and head to Inspiration Lake

Right next to Disneyland on Lantau Island, Inspiration Lake is set on a 30-hectare recreation reserve and is full of things to see and do. Sit in the shade of the trees by the lake, or take a romantic stroll around the jogging trail through the arboretum. You can hire bicycle and paddleboats there too.

3. Get Dinner at a Dai Pai Dong

Dai Pai Dongs are older-style outdoor restaurants that cook and serve food the traditional way. The official ones have licenses to serve a large number of people but it is not uncommon to share tables when things get busy.

Only 25 Dai Pai Dongs still exist, scattered around Central, Sham Shui Po, Wan Chai, Tai Hang, and Tai O; so head down for some old-school HK cuisine while you still can!

4. Hit some Hiking Trails

Hong Kong might be hectic and overpopulated, but there’s plenty of nature around if you know where to go. Get away from the crowds and hit up some of the hundreds of hiking trails and nature walks in this beautiful city.

Some of my favourite spots to go are: Hsien Ku Fung at the east end of Pak Sin Leng mountain range for amazing natural panoramic views, Castle Peak above Tuen Mun for breathtaking scenery over the city and surrounding mountains, and The Victoria Peak trails for convenience and postcard-like views from the top.
