How Many Blooms Does It Take To Welcome Spring In Australia?
We say at least a million! It’s that time of the year when Canberra’s concrete playground flourishes for Floriade! Each year, almost 500,000 visitors flock to the nation’s capital during September and October to experience Australia’s biggest celebration of spring, announcing that spring has sprung, with a show featuring over one million beautiful blooms.
With free entry, celebrate the season of new beginnings from 14 September until 13 October from 9.30am-5.30pm with a diverse roster of entertainment, cultural celebrations, food and wine, horticultural workshops, market traders, artistic displays, recreational activities and more.
Not just a flower show, taste test your way through Floriade’s line up of local food and beverage producers, from beer brews to cool climate wines and more providore’s market stalls. If you’re not one for crowds, take the scenic route by ferry across Lake Burley Griffin, or spectate from 300 metres above on a scenic helicopter flight.
If you consider yourself a bit of an amateur photographer or you’re looking to dish the dirt on this year’s Floriade before the crowds arrive, book your spot in an early morning photography workshop from 6.30am-9.30am. Adding an extra edge of Instagramability to this year’s flower fest that is Floriade, the annual Floriade Dog’s Day Out will be held on Sunday 13 October.
In its 32nd year of bloom, this year’s fittingly themed World In Bloom Floriade will see inspiration seeking gardeners, DIY hopefuls and general beauty enthusiasts crowd to see the garden beds which form the largest flower festival in the Southern Hemisphere. A line-up of celebrity guest presentations and tips from gardening experts is set to see a whole new generation of green-thumb ‘goners’.
From 3-6 October, head to the park after dark for NightFest – an evening extravaganza set to illuminate Floriade over four nights. As the sun sets over Lake Burley Griffin, Commonwealth Park will come alive with cutting-edge light installations, night markets, live music, comedians and DJs.
