Change the rule! A mantra that we embrace here at Ovolo, so it’s no surprise that Takashi Murakami’s latest exhibition has caught our eyes this month. His first solo exhibition in Hong Kong in six years, “Change the rule!” showcases never before seen new works by the famed Japanese artist. Eccentric and distinct, Murakami seamlessly blends Japanese popular culture with traditional painting, revealing themes and questions that connect past and present, East and West, technology and fantasy. 

The exhibition at the Gagosian Hong Kong features paintings, sculptures and films combining repeated motifs iconic to Murakami’s style as well as new imagery. A highlight of the show is The Lion of the Kingdom that Transcends Death, a 150cm x 300cm acrylic on canvas piece. But the work we identify with most? We Came to the Field of Flowers Through Anywhere Door (Dokodemo door)! depicting popular Japanese anime icon, Doraemon with his teleporting device, the anywhere door; aka, the answer to our travels woes. Now if only we could just jump through and skip town…
