Stanley Beach Hong Kong sits away from the hustle and bustle of the city, surrounded by beautiful ocean scenery wrapped in rejuvenating energy.
What are the best things that you can do when visiting this small Chinese town?
Chill at the famous Stanley Beach, dine at cafes and restaurants on the promenade, or go shopping at the Stanley Market—there are many things to do and explore! And wherever you go, the western atmosphere of the town will follow.
Stay in one of the best Hong Kong beach hotels and make your trip to Stanley pleasantly unforgettable. Our simple guide is here to help you do it! Keep reading!
Located at the southern part of the island, with many beaches, hills and coves, Stanley Bay has a rich history and culture, deeply rooted in the lives of the locals.
This coastal town is quite different from the other parts of Hong Kong and that’s why it has become one of the favourite spots among tourists. Instead of skyscrapers and high buildings, this area is mostly brightened by rural towns and villages.
Historically, Stanley Bay was the administrative capital of Hong Kong. It’s named after Lord Stanley, the British secretary at the time when Hong Kong was handover to Britain.
In the 1940s, the British and Japanese fought a war here… but since the 1970s, the city has been renovated into a tourist attraction filled with restaurants and shops. Today, the visitors can enjoy its peaceful seaside vibe, dine and relax along the promenade.
This unique beach is located on the opposite side of the main town, a ten-minute walk from the Stanley Market and promenade. It is best known for watersport activities and windsurfing.
After spending several days downtown, this beach will come as a perfect zone to take a break and feel far away from the noises of the city.
Even better if the watersports are your passion! The official swimming season runs from April through October and you can find a Water Sports Training Centre here with different courses at very reasonable prices.
There are plenty of beaches in Hong Kong, but not all of them are so easy to access. Luckily, Stanley Beach is!
You can get there by bus or subway from Exchange Square in Central, hop on a bus with numbers 260, or 6, or 6A, or 6X—these are the best routes and they have their stops nearby. Just follow Stanley Beach Road for about 200 metres from the bus stop.
Another option is to take a cab if you are coming from the Ovolo Southside which is the best hotel near Stanley Beach.
Depending on your interests and the kind of tourist that you are, this coastal town and area around the beach have a lot to offer. Not to mention that some of the best places to eat in Hong Kong are found here as well!
Especially if you stay at Ovolo Southside where a dining place with a bar on a terrace, overlooking the Hong Kong south coastline, is located – check out ABOVE by Komune.
The following are our suggestions for an excellent Stanley Beach experience:
Dragon Boat Festival is a great event which you shouldn’t miss if you are visiting around mid-June. It’s a traditional competition held annually to commemorate the Duanwu Festival.
If you are interested, you can check their website and see how you can participate. In case that rowing isn’t your cup of tea, enjoy a zongzi (steamed rice dumpling) or take a drink nearby.
There are impressive multi-storied restaurants along Stanley Beach, but we advise you to visit the Murray House – one of the oldest buildings in Hong Kong.
Constructed in 1844, it was once the living quarters for British officers but later it was relocated and now it is packed with restaurants, bars, and shops.
If you wish for an escape from the city, this building should be your choice to rest… and eat your meal with a spectacular view of the sea.
If you are a fan of shopping, you will love the Stanley Market! It’s an array of small shops and street vendors, located in Stanley New Street.
Here you can find heaps of stores selling arts, clothes, Chinese jewellery, souvenirs and many more! Gourmets, of course, we shouldn’t forget about Stanley Market restaurants!
If you have enough time to experience Stanley Bay thoroughly, here are more interesting spots that you might want to consider.
