80’s fashion trends that are making a comeback

returning 80's fashion trends

The ’80s were an iconic decade where big hair and bold clothing were an everyday staple. It was a time when fashion was adventurous, diverse, unapologetic and larger than life. Think of the ‘80s and style icons like Madonna, Jane Fonda, Grace Jones, Joan Collins, Blondie and Brooke Shields will undoubtedly spring to mind.

In an era when more was more and where neon, spandex and shoulder pads reigned supreme, we have taken a look at the top ‘80s fashion trends making a comeback.

Oversized Blazers

The oversized blazer may have been trending for a while, but more recently, it has been given an ’80s makeover, with exaggerated shoulders and bolder prints. Not just confined to workwear, the oversized blazer is perfect over jeans, trousers and dresses and is a quick fix to looking effortlessly cool.

The aptly named ’80s Blazer from Everlane was recently spotted on Katie Holmes and is the perfect pick to elevate any outfit. The chic checked blazer in khaki and black features a classic notch collar, ‘80s shoulder pads and three front pockets.

Patchwork Denim Jackets

The humble denim jacket first made its appearance in the 1880s, but it was only in the 1980s that it truly became a wardrobe staple. Cropped, studded, frayed or covered in patchwork pieces; the jean jacket was the must-have item of the decade.

Today, oversized denim jackets are slowly making way for the more unique patchwork ones, popular with top designers including Stella McCartney, Victoria Beckham and Dolce & Gabbana.

This Patchwork Collection Jacket from Zara is cropped, collared and provides an understated patchwork of denim.

Velvet Dresses

Velvet was the quintessential fabric of the ‘80s, and judging by London Fashion Week; it would appear that velvet is back. From trousers and coats to crushed velvet dresses, this trend has arrived just in time as we head into winter. The luxe fabric always adds a little sophistication and provides the perfect party wear, whether a winter wedding, festive party or glamorous event.

This Velvet Choker Dress from Revolve oozes ‘80s glamour, with padded shoulders, front cut-out and a velvety fabric with herringbone ribbing.

Cropped Jeans

Whilst the 70s were all about flared jeans, the ‘80s saw a shift to tighter fitting high-waisted jeans. Another trend to emerge were cropped jeans—a style still loved by the ultimate ‘80s style icon, Sarah Jessica Parker. Cropped jeans have no doubt started to make a comeback and are a versatile option, paired perfectly with colourful heels or statement sneakers. The style, cut just above the ankle, helps give the illusion of longer legs, ideal for petite women but equally stylish for ladies of all heights.

The 501® Original Cropped Jeans from Levi are an essential wardrobe staple, perfect for all seasons.

Catsuits

Love them or hate them, catsuits are making a swift comeback. Everyone from Kim Kardashian and Cardi B to Dua Lipa, Rihanna and Sandra Bullock have been spotted in these skin-tight silhouettes. Fear not, as catsuits are not necessarily a standalone ensemble but can be paired with an oversized coat, classic blazer, or a casual jumper tied at the waist.

This figure-hugging Catsuit from Alexander Wang gives an added nod to the ‘80s, in a pop of bright pink with a square neckline and textured logo jersey material.

Scrunchies

A trademark of ‘80s fashion, the scrunchies trend is back in full swing with no sign of disappearing. Fendi, Prada, Burberry and Versace—all the big designers are on board with their collections of high-end scrunchies. Far from the basic scrunchie of the ‘80s, scrunchies now come in an array of luxury silks, velvets and sustainable fabrics, providing the ultimate ‘80s accessory to elevate your look and ponytail. Everyone from Bella Hadid and Jennifer Lopez to Lizzo and Selena Gomez has been spotted wearing the once divisive hair accessory.

Burberry’s Ceramic Print Silk Scrunchie provides a stylish twist on an old classic, made with Italian-woven silk twill, complete with a hand-drawn design inspired by traditional British porcelain.
