Bored of your regular brunch spots? There’s more to the Sydney cafe scene than the ubiquitous avo toast – try one of these new cafes that are sure to hit the sweet spot, and it’s just nearby Ovolo Woolloomooloo Hotel.
Cultured Cafe Waterloo
Housed inside the gigantic Danks Street Produce Merchants shop-slash-warehouse in Waterloo, Cultured Cafe still manages to feel like a cosy place to eat. The menu features items inspired by marketplaces around the world, such as the pan-seared carrot pudding, a Thai-Burmese-English blackened-chicken sour curry with a scotch egg and the watermelon, spinach and salted-pineapple “fruit salad”. Try the red velvet latte – with no coffee in this latte, it’s basically a serving of cake in a cup.

Saga
Andy Bowdy, the pastry chef made famous by his elaborate layer cakes and soft serves, has opened his own cafe in Enmore. Saga serves up savoury sandwiches and a cake menu to die for. Desserts on offer include the Shoofly Pie, Pecan Pie Paris Brest, tiramisu laced with Tequila and Sticky Buns.

Uncle Tetsu’s Angel Garden
When just one Uncle Tetsu’s cheesecake isn’t enough, step upstairs from the original store to explore the full range of sweets on offer in this brand new dessert cafe. Try the famous Japanese-style cheesecake or choose from their range of exclusive desserts like the Australian honey-flavoured cheesecake and matcha flavoured cheesecake.

Schoolyard Cafe Cherrybrook
Cake-lovers in Sydney’s north-west can rejoice! The Schoolyard Cafe, due to open the second week of April, will offer diners a brekkie and lunch menu that includes fresh dishes such as buddha bowls and salads, as well as plenty of baked goods. All biscuits, muffins and cupcakes served will have a unique twist and be baked lovingly by hand on site. Our tip: order the famous cakes by the slice (whole cakes will also be available to order for special occasions).
